Kyla Embrey, who runs the online vintage shop Lost & Find, and who will be appearing at our July 8 Vintage Bazaar at the Aragon Ballroom, answers our questions about vintage style and her current inspirations.
TVB: How do you incorporate vintage pieces into your own personal style?
KE: I’m always wearing at least one vintage piece every day and I love
mixing old with new! Pretty much all of my bags without exception are vintage.
What do you look for in a great vintage piece?
You know when you see something and it makes you gasp because you think it’s really cool? The ability to make me gasp… that’s what I look for. Such pieces tend to have bright colors, fun patterns, or maybe are a classic staple but with an interesting detail. In addition, I look for pieces that are not only unique, but also can be easily mixed with a contemporary wardrobe. And bags! I love bags!
What’s inspiring you right now (trends, eras, styles, books, movies, other shops, etc.)?
I’m super inspired by the new Wes Anderson movie Moonrise Kingdom… the bright colors, the ’60s silhouettes, the camper look, New England prep. Everything about it feels so perfect for right now! I’ve also been known to be a little obsessed with Americana. I think there was a good 3 weeks where everything I wore was red, white, and blue. And I’m constantly inspired by all the amazing vintage vendors in this city: Dethrose, Zzouzi, BombshellShocked, Persnickety, JenStyle, Nov, Bunny’s Trunk Show… too many more to name!
Tell us about some of the stuff you’ll be bringing to the upcoming market.
Bags, bags, and more BAGS! Lots of leather, clutches, and colorful cross body bags. I’ve also been buying some more men’s pieces and larger women’s sizes. And you know I’ll be bringing a candy jar.
